Scoop: Is VW Working on a Facelift for the Polo or is it Testing Something Else?

It’s no secret that German carmakers usually update their cars around the four year-mark after launch, so when our spies nabbed a Volkswagen Polo Mk5 (released in 2009) fitted with testing equipment in Europe, a facelift was the first thing that crossed their minds.

The prototype featured no camouflage whatsoever with the only cosmetic change said to be the styling of the front apron. So, what does that mean?

VW Adds Extra Equipment and New R-Line Style Trim to Polo Range in the UK

When automakers present new models, more often than not, the cars sell themselves, but as the years go by and the initial enthusiasm wears down, they have two basic options to boost sales: perform a facelift or make changes to equipment and trim levels.

For the VW Polo Mk5 that has been in the market in its current form since 2009, it’s about time for a refresh, but for now, VW is opting for the second approach with the addition of extra equipment and the introduction of a new R-Line Style model in the UK.

New VW Polo R WRC Takes Second Place in its First Competitive Outing at Monte Carlo

Multiple world champion Sebastian Loeb of Citroen may have grabbed another win at the opening round of the 2013 FIA World Rally Championship at Monte Carlo, but it was Sébastien Ogier and the all-new VW Polo WRC that made the biggest impression.

The 29-year-old French rally driver managed to lead the Polo R WRC in its first competitive outing to second place. The third place on the podium went to Dani Sordo, who returned to Citroen after two seasons with MINI, which pulled out of the championship at the end of last year.

VW's Polo R WRC is a 220HP, €33,900 Celebration of its Entry into World Rallying [106 Photos]

Like every year, the 2013 World Rally Championship’s first race will be the Monte Carlo Rally. Even though the event won’t start until January 15, VW chose the Principality to host the launch of both its 2013 WRC racer and the road-going version that will make its motor show debut at next year’s Geneva Salon.

The Polo R WRC, which was displayed last March as a concept during the Wörthersee Tour festival, is a limited edition based on VW’s supermini that will be produced in just 2,500 units priced at US$33,900 (US$43,800) a pop. The order books open on Tuesday, December 11, though the first customers won’t receive their cars until September 2013.

A white paint job with blue and grey stripes, an aggressive front bumper with large intakes that’s supposed to echo that of the racer’s, 18-inch “Cagliari” wheels with 215/35 tires and a rear roof spoiler and diffuser make this limited edition Polo stand out from lesser versions.
