New BMW 2-Series Coupe Rendered in 3D [w/Video]

The 4-Series isn't the only new nameplate to join the ranks of BMW as the brand with the blue and white roundel logo is now preparing a new addition in the form of the 2-Series, which will take away the coupe and convertible models from the 1-Series lineup.

What we have here is a realistic digital render of what the new 2-Series Coupe with an M Sport package will look like when it goes on sale worldwide next year, courtesy of the creative minds over at Humster3D.

BMW 2-Series Test Vehicle Removes 50 Meters of Guardrail in High-Speed Autobahn Crash

The life of a factory test driver in Germany must be an eventful one. Driving prototypes all day long, up and down the autobahn, and whatever speed is relevant for any given test. However, things don't always go according to plan during these high-speed tryouts of new cars, as was the case with this BMW 2-Series prototype which removed 50 meters (165 feet!) of guardrail on the A72 Autobahn.

Details are sparse, but it would appear that the vehicle was being driven fast, when something happened, which lead to it mowing down the metallic barrier and spreading bits of itself over a 150-meter (490-foot) area, also launching projectiles/shrapnel at cars coming the other way – the damage to other vehicles wasn’t extensive, though.

Spied: BMW M235i and M435i Flex Their Turbocharged Straight-6s on the Nürburgring

Over the course of the next year, BMW will drop not one, but two mainstream coupe models (along with their soft-top convertible siblings), the 2-Series and 4-Series, which will replace the two door versions of the current 1-Series and 3-Series.

For the time being, only the 4-Series has been officially confirmed to be offered with an "M" variant, but both models will feature an M Performance version in the guise of the M235i and M435i, which build on the 235i and 435i iterations respectively, adding a slightly more powerful engine, a tweaked chassis and aerodynamic parts to the mix.

Spied: Undisguised BMW M235i Coupe Shows its Pretty Face

For the very first time, we can take an unobstructed look at BMW’s new 2 Series Coupe, seen here as an M235i model (think of it as an M135i with a boot and a prettier face). As you know, BMW’s new naming strategy means that what was previously known as the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible will soon be called the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible respectively.

Unlike the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible, the new generation model adopts a different front end than the hatchback upon which it is based. The sleeker headlights and the aggressive bumper with large intakes make the car look like a mini-me 4 Series Coupe, as does the similar profile.

Spied: BMW Trots Out Sportier M235i Coupe for Testing at the 'Ring

Here's another look at BMW's 1-Series Coupe successor, the new 2-Series Coupe that will likely arrive in showrooms sometime next year. The model seen in these scoop shots is the M Performance version of the series named the M235i.

Since it is based on the F20 1-Series hatchback, it won't come to as a surprise to learn that the M235i shares both its performance and styling mods with the M135i.

Spy Shots: New BMW 2-Series Reveals It's 1-Series-Derived Interior

Something tells us that BMW's marketing arm will soon shift into hyper-mode to convince us about the merits and the differences of its upcoming 2-Series and 4-Series lineups over the existing 1-Series and 3-Series ranges.

While most statements will hold true in regards of body styles and up to some extent, the exterior design cues, the new even-numbered models have a lot more in common with their odd-numbered siblings than what BMW's marketing divisions would likely freely admit.

Watch BMW Engineers Test a Group of 2-Series Coupes and Convertibles

It's a little late to sing the jingle bells, but oh, what fun is it to slide in a rear wheel drive coupe…eh? We're singing to the tune of a group of BMW engineers who seemed to be enjoying themselves in 2-Series Coupe and Convertible prototypes in Sweden, despite the freezing weather.

The cloth- and hard-top iterations of the new 2-Series will sit right below the recently announced 4-Series models as the most affordable way to get into a two-door sports car from BMW when they arrive in the market in about a year or so from now.

Latest Scoop Photos of the New BMW 2-Series Coupe

Camouflaged prototypes of BMW's forthcoming 2-Series Coupe and Convertible cars are beginning to make more frequent appearances on public roads, something that suggests we may be edging a little bit closer to their unveiling.

After capturing the rag-top model earlier this week, our scoopsters stumbled upon the coupe model of the brand new 2-Series range, which replaces the same body styles of the first generation 1-Series, while using the platform and engines of the second-generation 1-Series hatchback.

Spy Shots: New BMW 2-Series Convertible Stretches Out in the Snow

To the delight of our scoop photographers, the new 2-Series Convertible has made another appearance for the camera, this time while undergoing cold weather testing in Sweden.

In the same way that the 4-Series Coupe and Convertible models are based on the 3-Series chassis, the closed and open-top versions of the 2-Series share their DNA with the latest generation of the F20-codenamed 1-Series hatchbacks.

U Design: New BMW M2 Convertible Rendered

As BMW begins to circulate craftily camouflaged prototypes of its second generation 1-Series Coupe and Convertible models, which will form the new 2-Series range, out in the open, the question arises if the Bavarian carmaker has plans for an M2 high-performance version.

From what we have heard, BMW M seems open to creating an M2 model, possibly powered by a four-cylinder turbocharged engine instead of the M135i hatchback's 3.0-liter force-fed straight-six, which would mark a first for the brand since the demise of the original M3 E30 back in the early 1990s.

Spy Shots: Meet the All-New BMW 2-Series Coupe, the 4-Series' Smaller Sibling

At the end of November, our trusty spies caught up with a prototype model of the upcoming 2-Series Convertible with a traditional canvas top. Now, they’ve managed to meet up with the coupe version of the series,  about a year ahead of its market launch.

The 2-Series, which is to the 1-Series what the new 4-Series is to the 3-Series, will be the second model in BMW's range to adopt the firm's new nomenclature that calls for the use of an even number for sportier looking body styles, and an odd number for traditional saloons, hatchbacks, estates, crossovers and SUVs.

While covered in camouflage, we can still see that the 2-Series Coupe test car is bigger than the current 1-Series Coupe and sports a less pronounced booty.

Good news for those of you who don't like the second generation 1-Series hatchback's ginormous headlamps, as the prototype coupe appears to feature a sleeker set of lights. Like the 4-Series Concept, the 2-Series also gets a prominent hockey-stick-like vents right behind the front wheels.
