New Mazda6 with i-Eloop System Returns 40 MPG HWY, But Will Cost You At Least $31,775

The Mazda6 was conceived in such a way that it wouldn’t require a complicated hybrid system in order to achieve excellent fuel efficiency, while also keeping the drive sporty and the performance good. This was realized by making the car lighter and more modern in its conception and construction, which is Mazda's way of spurring on the ongoing evolution of the automobile. Read more »

2014 Mazda3 Sedan: New Gallery with 42 High-Res Photos [Updated]

As it turns out, yesterday's premature release of half-a-dozen photos of the brand-new 2014 Mazda3 Sedan was only the tip of the iceberg, as 37 high-res images of the compact model turned up on the web today.

Carscoops reader Mr Frisko pointed us towards the Czech website "Auto" for the new batch of photos that give us a better perspective of Mazda's fresh entry in the segment, in terms of both quality and quantity.

2014 Mazda3 Sedan: This Is Really It, The First Official Photos!

Let's all give a big great Спасибо (pronounced spa-SEE-buh) to the guys over at Top Gear Russia for the early release of the first official photos of the new 2014 Mazda3 Sedan and a big thank you to Carscoops reader Laurence H. for telling us about it.

The new four-door sedan of the latest generation "3" is exactly what you'd expect it to be – an even prettier body style than the hatchback (or at least it is in our eyes and you're always free to disagree with us) that also looks like a Mazda6 that shrunk in the dryer.

The addition of the boot looks seamless in these pictures, thanks in part to the elongated roofline and the crispy-styled rear end with a different design from the hatchback.

Unsurprisingly, the interior is the same as on the five-door model, though, we'll have to wait and see if it the four-door body style affects passenger space. One thing is for sure – the boot will be much larger due to the longer rear overhang.

Walk Around the 2014 Mazda3 Hatch in These New Videos

There are many reasons why Mazda and its dealers are hyped about the new, third generation of the brand's "3" hatchback (called Axela in Japan), which will soon be joined by a sedan variant.

Just to mention a few, it looks a whole lot better, thanks to the edgier and more well received (especially on the Mazda6) Kodo design language, while also benefiting from Mazda's suite of SkyActive technology comprising lightweight engines, transmissions, body and chassis.

All-New 2014 Mazda3 Sedan: This Could Be The First Official Teaser

We were just tipped off by Carscoops reader Bruno about an allegedly official photo teaser of the new 2014 Mazda3 Sedan that has been making the rounds on a number of internet forums this morning.

At a first (and second…) glance, it appears to be legit, though, a quick look at the galleries we've posted of the hatchback version of the Mazda3 reveals an identical image of the five-door model. So, what is it; real or fake?

Mazda Confirms Sedan and Hybrid Versions of New Mazda3, Plus HD Gallery and Videos

You didn't think it we were done with the all-new generation of the Mazda3 hatchback after the leaked photos and official details on the North American specification model, did you?

What we have to share with you now is fresh information along with high-resolution photographs and videos on the series following the official release of the car in Europe and Japan. Talking about Mazda's home market, the automaker confirmed plans to release a sedan version of the new "3" sporting a hybrid electric powertrain in Japan. Mazda did not say if and when it will offer the hybrid in other markets.

2014 Mazda3 Hatch: The Official Details on the U.S. Specification Model

Despite the leaked images earlier today, Mazda hasn't officially released the new "3" on its press website yet, but much in the same way as Mercedes did with the SLC AMG scoop shots, it has provided the official release to its media-partners (that doesn't sound right, and it’s not…) like Autoblog.com.

Since we've already seen what the compact hatchback looks like inside and out with this author's opinion being a very positive one based on the images alone (I'll wait for a real life look at the car for the final judgment), we'll concentrate on the details and especially the ones for the U.S. specification model referenced in the press release.

All-New 2014 Mazda3 Leaks Ahead of Official Reveal in All Its Kodo Design Glory

The all-new Mazda3 has been leaked online by the Czech website Autoforum, with the photo gallery also containing technical data charts of the new Japanese compact car.

As Carscoop's artist Josh Byrnes predicted, the Mazda3 builds on the Kodo design theme from the Mazda6, with the two cars sharing many design elements such as the flowing curved lines above the front and rear fenders, the harmonious combination between the grille and the sharp headlights and the plunged bonnet.

On the inside, the Mazda3 features an all-new minimalistic dashboard that reminds a little of the one from the Audi A3, due to the layout and the pop-up touchscreen. It looks like an ergonomic dashboard, with the controls being clearly delimitated.

The car is slightly wider than the previous generation, with the width being of 1,765 mm (+10mm), while it is 20mm lower (1,450 mm). The length stays roughly the same, at 4,465 mm. It also has a larger wheelbase by 60 mm (2,700 mm), which benefits especially the rear passengers. Boot volume is 350 liters (+10 liters than before), 30 liters smaller than the C segment's reference, the VW Golf hatchback.

Mazda to Reveal Something New on Xbox Live on Wednesday, Could it be the 2014 Mazda3?

With the popularity of gaming consoles having grown considerably over the past couple of decades (yes, it's been that long – for example, the original Playstation was released in 1994), it shouldn't surprise anyone that manufactures are looking into these devices to promote or even debut their products.

Today, Mazda announced on its FaceBook page that it will be revealing something new on Microsoft's Xbox console at 8:45 PM EDT on Thursday, June 26.

2014 Mazda3 Hatchback Scoop: Could This Be It?

Regular readers will no doubt remember that the upcoming, new generation 2014 Mazda3 hatchback has had its fair share of supposedly official but ultimately fake rounds of photos over the past few months.

That said, we cannot but take this photo, which reportedly first appeared on a Russian Facebook account, with a grain of salt - even though it does look like it may be real, with all the design details matching up to the camouflaged prototypes we've seen this year.

Mazda Says MX-5 it’s the World’s Fastest Convertible - If It Starts To Rain…

No, Mazda isn’t adopting all-wheel drive for the MX-5 / Miata, but when I first watched the video I really didn’t know what to expect. It is a recently uploaded promo that showcases the swiftness of the car’s folding hardtop mechanism.

They put it up against some serious competition, including a Lamborghini Gallardo, a Ford Mustang V6 and a Porsche 911. However, they add a twist by making it rain (caused by water tanker in the background, not actual clouds, though). All cars must then raise their roof, and then set off.

The Rotary Diaries: Crashing my RX-8 and Dealing With the Aftermath

Pride comes before a fall, as yours truly can testify. More than two decades of driving, the best part of them behind test cars, I prided myself on having a clean record. Sure, I was handed some speeding tickets and I did have my share of near misses but, somehow, I had managed to steer clear of an accident.

Now that record has been blotted by an accident in my RX-8; it was a low-speed one and, thank God, no one was hurt. Ironic that I would return the keys to every car handed to me, from a low-rent mini to a Porsche or a Bentley (the latter the company CEO’s personal car, no less) with not a scratch on them but I would crash my own car in a spectacularly silly way…

Another Round of Photos of the 2014 Mazda3 Hatchback, But Are They Real?

Most of our readers have likely read about the 2014 Mazda3-debacle (if you haven’t, please do so here), which had our original (and may we say quite accurate) rendering being picked up without credits and without watermarks by several sites and blogs after it appeared in the Bank of America Merrill Lynch's annual "Car Wars" analysis.

Anyway, it would appear that AutoTribune, one of the sites that hosts our rendering, in its vandalized state, posted a photo with a realistic-looking 2014 Mazda3 hatch sourced from an unnamed Japanese magazine.

Report Claims Next Mazda2 will Use Shortened Version of CX-5 Platform

Mazda is going to use a variation of its CX-5 platform to underpin the next generation Mazda2 / Demio supermini, according to a report from Just-auto.

The Japanese crossover was the first to get the brand’s SKYACTIV philosophy imprinted into its engineering and construction, while the Mazda6 sedan is the first vehicle which embraces it from the ground-up – both cars share lots of mechanical components and have received positive reviews since launch.

Carscoops' 2015 Mazda3 Rendering Fools Motor Trend, Autoweek and Automobile Magazine

Earlier today, Josh Byrnes sent me an interesting email pointing me towards to a story from Car Advice titled "Mazda 3 rendering sparks debate", in which there was a picture of the next generation Mazda3. The image, credited to Mazda North America, was from Bank of America Merrill Lynch's annual "Car Wars" analysis, which according to a CNN Money report, is "Published each May for some two decades" and "provides a glimpse into the future of the U.S. auto business."

Carscoops regulars will no doubt recognize the picture as a rendering from our own Josh Byrnes – sans Carscoops' watermarks that someone crudely removed, without our permission, of course. Besides Car Advice, the story was also posted on several other news and magazine websites, including Motor Trend, Autoweek, Automobile magazine.

After a Motor Trend reader left a couple of comments on the page informing them of the true source of the rendering, including this one, "JEEEEEEZ automobilemag staff - get your sources straight. This is the same 'rendered' image 1st posted on the carscoops site back in March http://www.carscoops.com/2013/03/future-cars-2014-mazda3-hatchback-goes.html", the publication posted the following update:

eBay Find: 1980 Mazda RX-7 GS

If you want to save yourself a lot of hassle in choosing an old sports car to drive around, there’s nothing wrong with going Japanese. Like this fairly clean first-gen 1980 Mazda RX-7 GS we found on eBay, which is said to be both mechanically sound and good to look at, according to its owner who bought it from “a friend of the original owner.”

Nevertheless, as with any used car and especially one fitted with a rotary engine, it would be wise to have a mechanic check it out and eliminate any nasty and costly surprises.

Spied: 2014 Mazda3 Hatchback Reveals Interior in New Shots

The Mazda6 will soon give birth (figuratively speaking, of course, but you get our point) to the all-new 2014 Mazda3 Hatch, which could arrive on North American shores as early as this fall, according to a trio of talkative U.S.-based Mazda dealers, and in Europe, possibly early next year. If true, look for the new model at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Back to our scoop story, our man with the long lens caught up with Mazda's more stylish replacement to the current, second generation 3, while traveling/testing incognito on a street in Germany.

There's no denying that the sharper lines of the Golf-rivaling hatch exterior are a follow up to the well-received design of the new Mazda6 series – for a better look at what the production model will look like, do check Carscoops' rendering here.

While the driver was waiting in line for the red light, our spies were also able to take pictures of the interior, which we get to see for the very first time.

Watch Comparo Between the Scion FRS, Mazda RX-8 and Honda S2000 - Which One Do You Like?

Our obsession with everything new and cutting-edge is a very damaging one, simply because it limits our horizon in so many ways. For instance, why would you buy a Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FRS when there are two perfectly good (older) sports cars that share all the right ingredients – front engine, rear wheel drive and excellent dynamics?

The two models I'm talking about are the smooth Mazda RX-8 (find out all you need to know about it here) and the screaming Honda S2000, which is my personal favorite, because I still think it looks good and sounds even better. All three cars were pitted against one another by Everyday Driver, and in the end a winner was chosen.

New Alfa Spider and Mazda MX-5 will Reportedly Get Different Engines

The marriage of Japanese technology and Italian design is a very fortunate one; the collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Mazda, for the creation of the new Spider and MX-5 is even more so. However, while we do expect the two cars to be quite competent, we’re curious to see how the manufacturers choose to differentiate them.

Now, while the styling will be predictably different, the cars will share the same platform and many mechanical bits. One thing they won’t share are reportedly the engines, which will be manufacturer-specific for each of the two offerings.

Mazda Makes Money for First Time in 5 Years, But N.A. Operations Still in the Red

This week, Mazda announced that it turned an annual net profit for the first time in five years. The Japanese carmaker reported pocketing a total of $364.3 (€279.6) million at the end of the 2012 fiscal year, on March 31, whereas on the same day of 2011, they had recorded a loss of $1.14 (€0.87) billion. Despite the fact that it was not mentioned, it is quite possible that the CX-5 crossover, which is hugely-popular world-wide, is the model which caused the turnaround. Read more »
