VW Wants €26,900 or About $34,500 for the All-Electric e-up! in Germany

If you thought the Volkswagen e-up! would be one of the cheaper EVs in the market, mainly because of its small size, and the affordability of the model which it’s based on, you were wrong.

Reality doesn’t come close to complimenting the previous statement, as VW has just revealed that the all-electric version of their über-compact city car will not be cheap at all, once it goes on sale in the months after its official reveal at the Frankfurt motor show, in September.

Renault Reminds Us How Practical Their Twizy EV Can Be With New Promos

Many aspects of the Renault Twizy are less than satisfactory, like the range, price and unavoidable battery lease costs. However, if you can learn to live with those, driving a Twizy could be better than riding a scooter, which is what Renault is trying to provide some competition to with their smallest EV. Nissan Wants Its Own, Better Renault Twizy EV

The Renault Twizy EV, a vehicle that makes sense for cruising on the beachfront in Ibiza, and very short pizza delivery duties, is actually backed by a very good concept.

It is very compact, easy to maneuver and park, while emitting no harmful gasses (at least not directly), and carrying two people in tandem. However, it is hampered by its limited range, very harsh suspension, limited practicality and, of course, the cost of leasing the batteries. However, Renault Group partner Nissan now wants to make its own, better version of the Twizy, as AutoNews Europe reports.

Tesla’s Supercharger Is Free Only for 85kWh Models, Otherwise It Costs $2,000

The modern business and industry jungle adopts many techniques to convince people to buy a product.

There are also those techniques that make you buy a product you don’t really want, and eventually begin to feel its unsatisfactory nature, and slowly wake up from the ad man-induced trance, realizing that you spent $49 on another food blender you didn’t need, even if its Teflon-coated blade is sharper than ever, and its motor can chew through coconuts – it’s still a food blender, even if the company calls it the Super Food Master Chef Express 5000.

Tesla Shares Hit Record of $117.18, Google Reportedly Interested in the Company

The only way for Tesla to go still seems to be straight up, especially after Elaine Kwei, an analyst for the Jeffries Group raised her per share target for the company, from $70 to $130. This alone reportedly caused an increase of 9.2 percent in share prices when the market closed, with a Nasdaq value of $117.18 and a peak during the day of $117.77.

Kwei also increased other estimates, including that for yearly Model S production that went up from 19,800 units to 21,500, as well as her Q2 output prediction, from 4,500 units to 5,000.

Production Version of New BMW i3 Revealed in Patent Drawings

This ladies and gentleman, is what the production version of BMW's foray into the pure and extended range electric vehicle category, the all-new i3, will look like when the Bavarian carmaker presents it to the public before the end of the summer and ahead of its public premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

While these are drawings, they are official patents of the production i3 previewed by a concept of the same name some two years ago at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. To see the differences between the conceptual and the actual i3, we placed pictures of the two cars side by side.

Battery-Powered Fiat 500e Reportedly Sold Out for 2013

It seems that EV buyers from California see the sense made by the battery-powered Fiat 500e, which is exclusively sold in the sunny West Side state, because according to a report from Wards Auto, they have sold out the production run for the remainder of the year. However, it isn’t specified exactly how many that means – can’t be a lot, since it’s only been available since April. Read more »

Tesla Battery Swap Takes 90 Seconds, Technology Will Come This Year

Tesla Motors is doing all it can to make the electric car a more user-friendly proposition. One of the greatest disadvantages of EVs is battery-charging time, which takes a lot more than filling up a conventional car with petrol. Tesla Motors has been working on a solution to this problem and came up with a battery swapping technology.

Mind you, it’s not a novel idea, as the now-defunct Better Place company was the first to implement it. However, Tesla has great confidence in its technology, which was demonstrated to hundreds of owners of Tesla EVs last night. Swapping the depleted battery of a Model S takes just over 90 seconds, less than half the time it takes to refill a gas tank.

Nissan Reveals Plan to Replace Worn Out Batteries for its Leaf EV

The battery pack in the Nissan Leaf failed to impress in the hottest of climates, like the US states of Arizona and Texas, where owners reported significant capacity losses. Truth is, though, the batteries are going to eventually fade out anyway - it’s what batteries do, and while the process can be slowed down (by keeping them at their ideal temperature), it cannot be stopped.

Nissan is fully aware of this, and has announced a program to swap out used batteries for new ones, specifically for the brand’s US customers. Set to commence in the first half of 2014, it will come to compliment the warranty already in place for the power storage unit (five years or 60,000 miles for capacity loss and eight years and 100,000 miles for defects).

Nissan Unveils ZEOD RC Le Mans Prototype, Confirms It’s All-Electric, Skimps on Other Details

We knew, thanks to a couple of teasers released by Nissan, that their electrified Le Mans prototype was set to be shown today. However, up until this point, it had not been confirmed what sort of powerplant would motivate this new racing car. Now that photos and information have been released, we realize that more questions are raised than answered, and aside from the confirmation that the ZEOD RC is all-electric, not much information was shared.

There’s a lot of testing to be done as the car, which will reportedly be able to exceed 300 km/h or 186 mph, will make its debut at next year’s edition of the famed French racing venue.

Aussie University Creates a More Mainstream Solar-Powered Car called Eve

When one thinks of solar-powered cars, the thought conjures up images of going along at three miles per hour, in something that looks nothing like a car. However, they have to be made ultra-aerodynamic, to make the most of what little power it is able to capture from the Sun.

Now, the University of New South Wales in Sydney, which benefits from the experience of the Sunswift team, has announced that this year’s car (their fifth-gen vehicle) will be approached differently, and the plan is to make it more like an actual car, and just generally “be more mainstream.”

Jay Leno Drives the Cadillac ELR, Says It’s a Different Kind of Fun

While the Cadillac ELR uses the Chevrolet Volt’s front-wheel drive platform and Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) hybrid powertrain, GM hates it when the ELR is compared to the more mundane Volt.

More luxurious, more powerful and more beautiful than the Volt (personal opinion here), the Cadillac ELR will also be much more expensive when in launches in 2014, with analysts estimating the ELR’s starting price between $60,000 and $70,000 – roughly double the Volt’s price.

Drive of Hydrogen-Powered Honda FCX Illustrates Lack of Refilling Stations in the US

We haven’t heard much about the fuel-cell Honda FCX Clarity since its launch in 2008, despite it being a very important car for the future of motoring, in terms of concept and the way it produces power.

However, in a recent organized drive which was attended by Autonews, one problem became very obvious – there are nowhere near enough hydrogen filling stations in the U.S. in order to make driving such vehicles at least marginally more practical than a battery powered EV, or any other vehicle, for that matter.

How Many Quarter-Mile Races Can the Tesla Model S Do On One Charge?

Fears regarding the Tesla Model S’ one-charge range don’t only concern the more eco-minded drivers who are set to achieve the maximum range out of it, because those with a faster driving style who also happen to like racing the classic quarter mile also have to be catered for.

Now, the crew over at DragTimes wanted to know how many 400-meter drag races can be performed with a full battery and good weather conditions.

Nissan Announces Intention to "Electrify Le Mans" with Race Car Teaser

Electrification has begun to seep into motor racing, and for some particular races, an EV presents genuine advantages over an internal-combustion-powered vehicle – Pikes Peak, for instance. There’s even an all-electric series called Formula E, which is already stirring up a bit of interest.

However, even the classic forms of motorsport have been affected, and the 2014 Le Mans race will be featuring an entry from Nissan, which is preparing its electrified race car as we speak – they are set to reveal it on June 21.

Yokohama's HER-02 EV is Gearing Up for Pikes Peak 2013 [w/Videos]

After finishing fifth in its class at Pikes Peak in 2012, Japanese tire manufacturer Yokohama is trying again this year, with the same all-electric vehicle, dubbed the HER-02.

Having been in development since 2009, and entered in the famed hill-climb starting in 2010, the vehicle has reached some level of technical stability most likely, if you will, and hopes are high - every year has seen the car perform better, so 2013 should be no exception.

Ford Begins European Production of the Focus Electric

Ford has started production of the Focus EV, the first full-electric vehicle to be built by the U.S. carmaker in Europe. Manufacturing of the Focus Electric was integrated directly into the established Focus assembly line at the company's Saarlouis plant in Germany.

Instead of using a gasoline or diesel engine for its motivation like the regular Focus models, the Electric sports an electric motor and lithium-ion battery powertrain that produces 145PS (143 hp) allowing the hatch to reach a top speed of 84mph (135 km/h).

BMW Says 100,000 People Booked Test-Drives for the i3 EV

BMW has about 100,000 reservations from people who want to test the i3 electric vehicle, sales boss Ian Robertson said. He added that the carmaker also has “significant numbers of deposits” for the car, declining to give the exact number. The interest for the i3 leads the executive to believe the car will be a game-changer in the sector.

"We are confident that with the i3 and i8 we will shift the needle because we will shape some of this technology" in the EV sector, Robertson said at the Automotive News Europe Congress today.
