New 2014 Cadillac CTS Priced from $46,025 or $7,000 More than Outgoing Model

General Motors has just released pricing information on the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan before it arrives in dealerships across the States this fall.

The mid-size luxury model starts at $46,025 for the entry-level version fitted with a new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four delivering 272hp, which makes it close to $7,000 more expensive than the current base CTS with a 270hp 3.0-liter V6. Keep in mind, though, that the new CTS is 5-inches longer but also 244 pounds lighter, and in base trim, also quite faster than its predecessor hitting the 0-60mph (96km/h) mark in 6.1-seconds (vs. 7.6 seconds).

The Evolution of the Cadillac CTS Through Three Generation Models

Cadillac, one of the oldest names in the world of premium automobiles, has had its ups and downs over the 111 years of its existence, ranging from innovations like the first commercially available V8 engine in the U.S. on the 1914 Model 51 and styling revolutions such as tailfins and wraparound windshields in the late 1940s and 1950s, to failures like its diesel adventures of the late 1970s.

After a long period of letdowns, the year 2003 brought about the first modern Cadillac, the CTS, which helped the wreath and crest company enter the 21st century and defined its brand image more than any another effort in recent times.

My Selection of the Most Promising Crop of Current Models from Detroit's Big Three

The US automotive industry used to represent so much more than just the Big Three, which are no longer automakers in the romantic sense, but multinational corporations that make cars. In my view, the American automotive industry sector was at its peak in the 1930s, and then it slowly faded into a mentality of bigger is better in the 1970s. By the year 2008, the remaining three major forces admitted defeat and it was only thanks to Obama's controversial bailout scheme that they are still here today.

Now, while in the 1990s, and even up until 2008, many American cars were for the most part mediocre when compared to the standard set by the Japanese and Europeans, they now seem to be making a worthy comeback, with models which would appeal to any potential car buyer in the world as genuinely enticing propositions. However, don't mistake this for a buying guide, because it's not – it is my selection of promising American cars.

2014 Cadillac CTS Detailed, New Vsport gets 420HP Twin-Turbo V6 [Video & Live Reveal]

If there's one American automaker that seems to have its act together after several troubled decades, it is Cadillac, which is proving once again that it is on the right path with the next generation of the car that started it all in 2002, the CTS.

The new, third generation of the CTS that was officially (we've already seen pictures of it) revealed today ahead of its first public appearance at the 2013 New York Auto Show on Wednesday, March 27, has all the ingredients to not only hold on to, but also to gain new customers in the highly competitive executive sedan segment – at least in North America.

These ingredients include a longer and consequently roomier body yet a lower curb weight compared to its predecessor, a more elegant or sophisticated, if you prefer, styling for the exterior and interior and a wider choice of modern powertrains.

For the first time since the inception of the CTS, the new model is now positioned squarely against the likes of the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series as well as newer rivals such as the Jaguar XF.

The new CTS has grown five inches (127 mm) in length, reaching 195.5 inches (4,966mm) and features a 1.2-inch (30mm) longer wheelbase, but at the same time, the roofline and the base of the windshield are about an inch lower, contributing to a more aggressive stance.

2014 Cadillac CTS Sedan Revealed in Detail in New Photos [19 Photos]

We don't know for how long Cadillac planned to keep the spanking-new 2014 CTS under wraps, but following an initial surprise (of sorts) this morning with a first batch of pictures showing bits and pieces of the executive model, Carscoops reader Lloyd pointed us towards USA Today, which has dropped a full photo gallery.

The new generation of the CTS sports a sleeker, better-proportioned and more dynamic interpretation of Cadillac's sculpted Art & Science styling language, with finer detailing, especially up front with the tear-drop LED lights

Official: All-New 2014 Cadillac CTS gets 420HP Twin-Turbo 3.6-liter V6

We suspected that the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan would be one of the five world premieres GM is preparing to bring to the New York Auto Show next week, and now it's official.

While the Detroit carmaker is holding back on the pictures, it confirmed details on the engine lineup, which is highlighted by a brand-new 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V6 gasoline unit paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission – both a first for the brand.

GM Confirms 5 World Premieres for NY Show, Including Redesigned Camaro and New Cadillac

The world's automotive eyes may be focused on the ongoing Geneva International Auto Salon, but there's another important event coming up this month, the 2013 New York International Auto Show, and we just learned that General Motors will be heading to the Big Apple with no less than five world premieres and a North American debut.

Besides the new Chevrolet SS sports sedan that we already know about, the other four world premieres from GM are a "refreshed" version of the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro, which the company says "advances the design and performance attributes that have made it the most popular sports car under $50,000 for three consecutive years," two new Buicks and a Cadillac.

We don't know for how long Cadillac plans to continue production of the current CTS as we're nearing closer and closer to the presentation of the new generation model, but for now, the wreath and crest brand has prepared two limited edition versions of the high-performance 556hp CTS-V series, named Silver Frost and Stealth Blue (the latter is offered on the CTS coupe as well). Cadillac to Dial Back CTS Production as Brand-New ATS is Stealing Sales

If you build the right product, customers will come. The thing is, some of them may come from places you don't want them to. The Cadillac ATS compact sports saloon is still young but after its launch in September, sales of its slightly bigger sibling, the CTS, dipped a mighty 40 percent in October.

According to data from Edmunds, that’s no coincidence. The ATS might be intended as a direct BMW 3-Series rival yet the CTS is also one of the most cross-shopped models amongst its potential buyers.

Scoop: 2014 Cadillac CTS Sedan Filmed Racing Around the Nordschleife

There's no place like the Nürburgring Nordschleife when it comes to testing and honing the handling dynamics of a vehicle, something that even General Motors has long accepted.

And now, with Cadillac having turned most of its guns directly towards BMW, the wreath and crest brand is increasing its presence on the fabled circuit, which recently made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Spied in this video is the next generation of the Cadillac CTS that was captured on film being thrashed around the 'Ring.

Cadillac's Plans for the 2013-15 Model Years Reportedly Include New Flagship Limo and Escalade

The next 24 months will be a busy time for Cadillac in terms of new products as the Detroit automaker has plenty on its plate including the presentation of a flagship limousine loosely based on the well-received Ciel convertible sedan concept.

A report from Automotive News (sub. required) citing sources from within General Motors outlines Cadillac's plans for the 2013-15 model years.

According to the insiders, GM has given the green light for the development of a full size, rear-wheel drive luxury sedan that will sit atop of the range rivaling the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, Jaguar XJ and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Spy Shots: 2014 Cadillac CTS Sedan Grows in Size

These are some of the best spy pictures of the next generation 2014 Cadillac CTS yet as GM's engineers have finally removed the black vinyl camouflage from the prototype models, a sign that we're getting closer to the official reveal of the premium sedan model.

That's not to say that we have a clear view of the new CTS, but by discarding the vinyl covers we can at least see the outline of the car and sample the latest interpretation of Cadillac's "Arts & Science" edgy design formula.

While the styling will be crucial for the third generation CTS, one of the most important things to know about the new car is that it will finally grow in size to compete directly against the BMW 5-Series, Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Lexus GS models instead of hovering between two categories.
