Volkswagen Exec Confirms Development of Smaller and Larger SUVs than the Tiguan


We knew for some time that Volkswagen officials were warming up to the idea of expanding the brand's lineup of SUVs with new models, and now, a spokesman for the German automaker has confirmed the news.

Speaking to Autonews, VW spokesperson Peter Thul told the publication that the company has decided to build two models, including a compact SUV smaller than the Tiguan and the other, a larger crossover with a seven-seat layout to appeal to North American drivers and offer an alternative to minivans.

VW Exec Dreams of More SUVs and the Return of the Phaeton in U.S. Lineup


To meet its ambitious goal of reaching 800,000 annual sales in the United States by 2018, up from 324,402 deliveries last year, Volkswagen might need a little help through the introduction of new models and variants.

If Rainer Michel, Volkswagen of America's vice president for product marketing and strategy, could get his way, he would enhance the company's American lineup with a new base SUV placed under the current Tiguan crossover and a larger model slotting between the latter and the mid-sized Touareg SUV.

Volkswagen Mulling a Mid-Size SUV for the U.S. Market


True to its mantra of leaving no segment of the car market unattended, Volkswagen is now pursuing the presentation of mid-size SUV for North America. Such a model would be about the same size as the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes GLK.

"There's a great opportunity for us for a mid-size SUV in the U.S. that would be positioned between the smaller Tiguan and larger Touareg SUVs," said Volkswagen of America CEO Jonathan Browning, during an Automotive Press Association event in Detroit.
