This is Possibly The First Recorded Crash of a New VW Golf GTI Mk7

Even though there's always going to be a first time for car crashes, we sincerely doubt anyone in their right mind wants to have the distinction of being the number one when it comes to any kind of accident.

Nevertheless, sometimes, you just can't avoid it, as was the case of a duo of journalists trying out the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk7 during the hot hatchback's launch event in Cape Town, South Africa.

Chris Harris Finds the Meaning Behind the New VW Golf GTI

I don’t really understand why some people used to call the old Mk V and Mk VI VW Golf GTIs boring, when in actual fact, with 200 – 210 hp, they are anything but that, and neither is the latest one, which is the lightest and most powerful one in years.

If you want a boring GTI, then look no further than the Mk IV, which only had a laughable 148hp (150PS) when it first came out, and was virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the range – it didn’t even have a proper visible exhaust tip, hiding its pipe behind the rear bumper.

Mercedes A45 AMG Easily Beats BMW M135i and VW Golf GTI in Comparison Test

The following comparison test from Autocar couldn’t bring together more different types of hot-hatches. For starters, there’s the all-wheel-drive Mercedes A45 AMG powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder unit developing 355 horsepower (360PS). Then there’s the rear-wheel-drive BMW M135i powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six engine that churns out 316 hp (320PS). Finally, the most curious choice of the test is the VW Golf GTI Performance, a front-wheel-drive 227hp (230PS) car powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. Read more »

First Photos of VW's Design Vision GTI Concept, the Golf we'd All Want to Drive [Updated]

There's nothing terribly wrong with the new Golf GTI Mk7, but there's something about Volkswagen's "Design Vision GTI" track racing concept that gets our heart pumping.

It could be the 71mm (2.8 inches) wider, 57mm lower (2.2 inches) and 15mm (0.6 inches) shorter body of VW's Wörthersee Tour study with the aggressive details that exaggerate the original GTI's styling cues, or the fact that instead of the regular model's 217hp (220PS - base) / 227hp (230PS – Performance Edition), it sports a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 with 496hp (503PS) and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft).

VW Reportedly Developing Carbon Fiber Roof for High-Performance Golf

Carbon fiber is slowly migrating into the mainstream, with manufacturers like Ford and BMW actively working to bring associated costs down, so that more cars can benefit from the multitude of benefits it offers.

Now, according to a report from Edmunds, Volkswagen, which is also working towards the same goal, is currently developing a carbon fiber roof for its high-performance Golf variants, which will lower the car’s center of gravity and reduce its weight by around 18 to 20 pounds (8.2 to 9.1 kilos).

Promising to be the most radical Golf-based concept to make its way to the Wörthersee festival since the Golf GTI W12 from 2007, the new Design Vision GTI racing study was created by a team under the guidance of VW brand head of design, Klaus Bischoff.

BMW M3 E30 vs. Scion FR-S vs. VW Golf GTI in MT's Latest Head2Head Video

Fans of affordable sports cars have a new dilemma now that the Toyota FT-86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BR-Z trio has brought rear-wheel-drive into the equation. What’s better: a front-wheel-drive hot hatch like the VW Golf GTI or a rear-wheel-drive coupe like the ones offered by the Japanese carmakers?

To find the answer(s) to this question, two editors from MotorTrend and European Car took the Scion FR-S and the sixth-generation VW Golf GTI for a spin around the track. They also brought along a third car to the playground, the 1989 BMW M3 from the E30 generation, to serve as a benchmark.

Auto shows generate a lot of online buzz, especially when important new cars are launched. However, reality is little bit more complicated than that.

According to a study from media monitoring firm Kantar Media, the car that swept journalists off their feet at the Geneva show was none other than the mundane Volkswagen Golf!
