BMW Showcases "The Great 8", Their Flagship Coupe of the 1990s

While the BMW 8-Series wasn’t a big commercial success, it was one of those interesting cars which was bound to gather a following in future years, simply because it represents an odd car from a very serious, traditional manufacturer that never strays too far from its core design philosophy of the era.

Dubbed the "Great Eight" by some, the GT coupe was a very sleek-looking BMW, and for many, the looks and the rarity factor alone are/were what drew them to the car in the first place.

This is what a BMW 860i Based on the Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 Could Look Like

Even though personally, I wouldn't necessarily agree on the use of the 8-Series moniker on such a large and more luxury-orientated coupe like the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 Concept, some officials over in Munich disagree and have hinted that the  Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2013 study "gives an indication of how such a car [8-Series] might look".

While there's no question that the concept model is very close to a production car, it isn't quite there yet, which brings us to this very convincing Photoshop from the creative minds at Autoprojecoes.

BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 Coupe Filmed at Concorso d’Eleganza

BMW’s main exhibit at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza was a large luxury coupe concept developed together with one of Italy’s finest design houses and coachbuilders, Pininfarina.

You’ve probably read all about the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 Coupe and seen the official video, but it’s one thing to see the car in the studio and another in a real environment.

New BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 Coupé Looks More 7-Series Coupe than 8-Series [Video]

BMW and Pininfarina have blown the covers off their new jointly designed and developed Gran Lusso Coupé in advanced of the one-off model's world premiere at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2013 this weekend.

The large coupe model is the outcome of the first collaboration between BMW and Pininfarina, and it follows the BMW Z4-based Zagato Coupé presented at last year's Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

When the Bavarian carmaker shared a sketch and a couple of cropped details of the car along with the information that it uses a V12 powerplant earlier this month, the first thing that came to mind was the possibility of a 21st century version of the 8-Series Coupe that was built from 1989 to 1999.

In our eyes, the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 Coupé looks more like a two-door, coachbuilt version of a future 7-Series made to compete against the Bentley Continental GT, than a true successor to the 8-Series, but BMW officials think otherwise.

New BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 Coupé Brings Back Memories of the 8-Series

The last time BMW had a V12-powered coupe in its range was at the end of the previous decade with the range topping versions of the 8-Series (the 850Ci and 850CSi specifically). The reason why we mention this has to do with the Bavarian carmaker's announcement on the world premiere of the one-off Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2013 on May 24.

Designed and created in collaboration with famed Italian design house Pininfarina, the Gran Lusso Coupé follows in the footsteps of the BMW Z4-based Zagato Coupé that was presented at last year's Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

Designers Pays Homage to BMW Z8 and 8-Series Models with MZ8 Concept

Two of the most recognized sport models to come out from BMW's factory in the past quarter century are the 8-Series, built from 1989 to 1999, and the Henrik Fisker-designed Z8 roadster, offered from 1999 to 2003.

These two cars stimulated a design thesis from Christophe Jourd'hui, a graduate in transportation design management at the International School of Design (IDS) in Valenciennes, France, for a new BMW sports car named the MZ8.

BMW 850Ci Art Car Homage for Sale on eBay

Some BMW 8-Series owners prefer to keep their coupes as garage queens, and some like to turn them into convertibles, while others have really no idea what they're doing

This particular owner of the pictured 1993 850Ci that we discovered on eBay decided to convert the German sports tourer into a weekend track racer on the inside, and a rolling piece of art on the outside.

BMW’s M Division Pitches a 600HP M8 Supercar Based on the i8 Plug-In Hybrid’s Platform

For a company that produces some of the finest sports cars in the world, BMW is hesitant to go one step further and produce a fully-fledged supercar, something rivals Audi and Mercedes-Benz have done with the R8 and SLS AMG respectively.

In fact the M1, which was produced for BMW by Lamborghini between 1978 and 1981 in just 456 units, is still the only supercar and, at the same time, the sole mid-engined model to sport the blue propeller.

Oh Why, Oh Why Would Someone Do This to a BMW 8-Series Coupe?

It's hard to believe just by looking at well-preserved examples, but next year, the BMW 8-Series coupe will be a quarter of a century old as it debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in September of 1989, remaining in production for a decade.

It's also hard to believe that someone would spend time, effort and money to transform a 1993 850i into an odd-looking caricature (and that's a huge understatement) like the one pictured here.

1991 BMW 850i with 6-Speed Manual and Only 11k Miles for Sale

While not a barn find in the literal sense, with only 11,440 miles or 18,407 kilometers on the odometer, this 1991 BMW 850i Coupe might as well be one.

The seller, Denver-based 'The Motorsports Gallery', notes that the silver colored GT is a one-owner car with complete service records adding that aside from being upgraded with a Dinan Chip, a sports exhaust system, plus AC Schnitzer alloy wheels, it is completely stock.

BMW Bringing M8 Prototype and Zagato Coupe Study to The Legends of the Autobahn

A blast from the past and the most recent concept study to wear the blue and white roundel will highlight BMW's presence at The Legends of the Autobahn 2012, which takes place on Friday, August 17, at the Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel Valley, California.

The fourth annual all-German brand Concours, which is hosted by the BMW Car Club of America, Mercedes-Benz Club of America, the Porsche Club of America and the Audi Club of North America, will play host to the North American premiere of the BMW M8 prototype and the Z4 Zagato Coupe.

The M8 Coupe project was never displayed at a show and many believed it had been destroyed until the Bavarian automaker opened the gates of its M-brand's vault in 2009 revealing it along with other gems such as the E34 M5 Cabriolet and E36 M3 Compact.
