Caterham Wants to Build Renault-Based SUV and Hatch!

Yes, you read the title right; Caterham has just announced that aside from the planned sports car they are making with Renault (due in 2016), they have two more models in view for the near future. One is an SUV/crossover, which company CEO Tony Fernandes says “will be huge,” if they get it right, while the other is a subcompact/supermini. Read more »

Renault Reminds Us How Practical Their Twizy EV Can Be With New Promos

Many aspects of the Renault Twizy are less than satisfactory, like the range, price and unavoidable battery lease costs. However, if you can learn to live with those, driving a Twizy could be better than riding a scooter, which is what Renault is trying to provide some competition to with their smallest EV. Automakers Are Watching Closely What Is Happening in Egypt

The political unrest in Egypt is taking its toll on automakers, with Toyota having previously temporarily shut down its subsidiary in the African country because of the demonstrations against (the now former) President Mohamed Morsi.

The Japanese carmaker said that operations restarted and that none of its dealerships was damaged. A Toyota spokesman told Autonews Europe that sales were not affected and that he was not aware of any effects on Toyota’s CKD assembly plant in Cairo.

Nissan Wants Its Own, Better Renault Twizy EV

The Renault Twizy EV, a vehicle that makes sense for cruising on the beachfront in Ibiza, and very short pizza delivery duties, is actually backed by a very good concept.

It is very compact, easy to maneuver and park, while emitting no harmful gasses (at least not directly), and carrying two people in tandem. However, it is hampered by its limited range, very harsh suspension, limited practicality and, of course, the cost of leasing the batteries. However, Renault Group partner Nissan now wants to make its own, better version of the Twizy, as AutoNews Europe reports.

Next Renault Twingo to Only Be Available as a Five-Door

According to a report from Autonews Europe, Renault has abandoned plans to make a three-door version of its new rear-engined Twingo (featuring a platform shared with the next Smart models), and the only body style to be offered will be a five-door hatch. They say the decision was made in order to boost the practical appeal of the car, so that more men buy it. Read more »

Renault Uses Uninspired Ads to Promote Its New Practical Offerings

There are so many ways in which a video ad for a practical affordable vehicle can be made, but it seems that at Renault, having people put in or move out various objects is more than enough.

Sure, it highlights the practical side of these affordable vehicles well, but those in the market for one are already expecting that so it is a bit redundant – it can’t be that hard to make something which is both informative and entertaining to watch with the kind of ad wizardry that goes on behind the scenes.

Renault Drops the Rear Seat from the Twizy and Turns It into the Twizy Cargo Pocket Van

Renault has unveiled the Twizy Cargo, a new version of the small battery-powered model designed for carrying goods – or at least in theory. Don’t think of it as an alternative to the Kangoo, as the boot can only accommodate 180 liters (6.35 cubic feet) of luggage weighing a maximum of 75 kilograms (165.3 lbs). This has been done at the expense of the single rear seat, which has disappeared to create some cargo space.

Built by Renault Tech in cooperation with Renault Sport Technologies, the Twizy Cargo has a watertight boot that is accessible via a rear lockable door that opens to 90 degrees. The conversion leaves the front seat still moveable, while the rear door features a locking system that works with the ignition key.

Renault Details 2014 F1 1.6-Liter V6 Turbo Unit: 760 HP, 35 Percent More Fuel-Efficient

Starting with the 2014 season, Formula 1 regulations shift drastically, and the most significant change is the switch from 2.4-liter normally aspirated V8 engines to 1.6-liter direct-injected turbocharged V6 units.

Renault is the first F1 engine manufacturer to present the new power unit, officially named Energy F1-2014 to reflect synergies with the fuel-efficient Energy engine used in its road cars. The 1.6-liter V6 engine is fitted with energy recovery systems that increase efficiency by harvesting energy dissipated as heat in the exhaust or brakes.

Modular vehicle platforms are the hottest thing in the auto industry now, following VW’s introduction of the MQB architecture that underpins most new VW Group cars launched since 2012.

Now, Renault and its alliance partner Nissan have announced that they will launch a Common Module Family (CMF), which they say, will “extend manufacturing commonalisation to an unprecedented number of vehicles developed within the Alliance.”

Renault Subtly Updates the Koleos, Gains New Grille and Multimedia System [w/Videos]

Renault has released a mildly revised Renault Koleos at the International Buenos Aires Motor Show in Argentina. Renault says its crossover model now features the brand’s latest identity, but the changes are rather small compared to the facelifted model launched in 2011.

The most obvious modification is the redesigned V-shaped grille that has also received a larger rhombus logo. The rest of the front end is virtually unchanged, as is the rear, with the Koleos only gaining redesigned two-tone wheels, a chrome finish for the side protective strips and a new body color called Ebony Brown.

Renault Says Strange Looks Affected Laguna Sales, New Model Promises ‘More Emotion’

The CEO of Renault, Carlos Tavares, is convinced that the uninspiring lines of the Laguna may have dented its sales appeal, and “it’s possible that because the rear of the hatchback is a little bit strange, this has damaged the potential of the other cars” (the estate and coupe models), he was quoted as saying by Autocar magazine.

“We need to continue to work on appeal,” he said, adding that “if you look at the new cars — Zoe, Captur and Clio — you understand what I mean. It is about having character without being strange.”

Alpine Looking to Follow Porsche Role Model and Hopefully Achieve Acclaim That Way

Porsche has always said that they build all models aside from the 911 to help their iconic sports car remain at the cutting edge. They say that they have to sell cars like the Cayenne and Panamera in order to help fund the ongoing improvement of their rear-engined halo car.

Now comes a brand that has just had almost two decades-worth of dust blown off its name with a relatively recent concept looking to adopt the same tactic in order to prevail. Of course, I am talking about Alpine.

Renault Design Chief Says Espace MPV will be Replaced by a Large Crossover

Europe's first modern-day minivan (there had been previous attempts like the 1956 Fiat 600 Mulitpla) will soon be put to rest, at least in its current form, according to Renault design chief, Laurens van den Acker, who told Autonews Europe that the French carmaker will replace the Espace with a crossover model combining styling and practical elements from SUVs and MPVs (Multi-Purpose Vehicle).

What this means is that the Espace's successor will attempt to keep the interior spaciousness and practicality of the current model while placing it under a more SUV-like body with a higher driving position.

Have $9,200 to Spare? How About this 184 HP Renault Super 5 GT Turbo from eBay

The French are renowned for making great hot hatches, and aside from the selection of modern examples of the genre, there are also a great deal of classic ones to choose from.

A Renault Super 5 GT Turbo (which in some ways, is being revived by the next Twingo) would be a quirky left-field choice, especially in the US and Canada, which is why this red example from eBay looks like a tempting buy.
