Carisma Says it Has Crafted the Most Luxurious Land Rover Defender Interior Ever

You probably remember the Mercedes-Benz Viano that Carisma Auto transformed into a very luxurious van. Now, for its latest conversion, the company chose a car that normally doesn’t have anything that could be described as luxurious – we’re talking about the rugged Land Rover Defender.

As the UK-based aftermarket specialist usually operates, the exterior of the Defender remained untouched – which is why we don’t get to see it in the gallery (either that, or the owner wanted his or her 4x4 to remain anonymous).

Learn How to Operate an Old Land Rover With This Period Video Guide

The new Range Rover represents the culmination of decades-worth of off-roading experience wrapped up in a raised limousine body and filled with electronic gizmos and leather. That is all good and does genuinely represent progress, but for some, pushing a button is nowhere near as satisfying as pulling a lever and getting that mechanical feeling going – you actually feel like you’re doing something. Land Rover just turned 65 on April 30 and aside from the usual festivities with a historical display of more than 130 vehicles at the company's original testing ground at Packington Estate, the automaker presented a new special edition Defender named "LXV", which is the Roman numeral for 65.

It is based on the standard Defender Hard Top and equipped with a 2.2-liter diesel engine producing 120hp (122PS) and 360Nm (265 lb-ft) of torque, linked to a 6-speed manual.

Classic Land Rover Defender to Be Made in Sri Lanka as Well

The Land Rover Defender – it's been around so long, its name should not even use capitals any more – it is what it is, a land rover defender, which has been moving itself over land and defending countries for decades now.

Sure it may have evolved considerably from its Series I predecessor of 1948, but it's shape is instantly recognizable. Now, in the wake of a modern replacement, the Defender as we all know it, is being given another home, on the peaceful island of Sri Lanka, just off the southern tip of India.

Land Rover Electrifies Classic Defender for the Geneva Motor Show

If you've ever had the opportunity to drive the classic Land Rover Defender on the road, you'd be right to think that it's, if not the, one of the most outdated new vehicles in the world. Take it for a spin off the road, however, and we're pretty sure that you will quickly change your mind, which is why the British firm continues to offer a vehicle that can trace its roots back to the original 1948 model.

Still, as capable as it may be when the going gets tough, a replacement is long overdue, which is why Land Rover presented last year's DC100 Concepts. Until the next Defender is ready, though, Land Rover wants to use the current model as an experimental vehicle to test a new electric powertrain.

Land Rover wants New Defender to be More Modern but Tough as Nails

Despite receiving some updates for 2013, which consist mainly of two new colors, new seats and an audio system, the Defender’s replacement is long overdue.

Land Rover, of course, knows this very well; as a matter of fact, it hopes that the next Defender will do for the brand, in terms of image and sales, what the Evoque has done for its Range Rover luxury sub-division: become a sales hit, bring new buyers to the brand and update its image.

A. Kahn's Land Rover Defender Harris Tweed Edition

Harris Tweed is a trademarked cloth that in order to carry the name, must be made from pure virgin wool and hand-woven by the islanders on the Isles of Lewis and Harris, Uist and Barra in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.

Being a fabric, don't look for it on the outside of Afzal Kahn's newest creation based on the classic Land Rover Defender, but in the interior of the rugged 4x4 model. There you will find the traditional cloth on parts of the seats, the headliner, sun visors, dashboard, door trims and other select components of the cabin.
