All-New Hyundai Genesis: Our Spies Get Up Close to the Korean Luxury Sedan

If there's one model that has single-handedly changed customer perceptions about Korean cars in general, and the Hyundai group specifically, it's the Genesis mid-size premium sedan, which proved that the company was finally ready to look German and Japanese rivals straight in the eyes.

The fact that the press and consumers have warmly received the Genesis puts a lot more pressure to Hyundai for its replacement, a futuristic glimpse of which we had with the HCD-14 Concept at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Hyundai's goal with the second-generation model is to improve the formula all around, offering the Genesis with a more dashing and sharper-looking exterior loosely inspired by the HCD-14, a better quality interior with more attention to styling details and wider options, which for the first time, will include all-wheel drive.

Future Cars: Hyundai's All-New 2014 Genesis Sedan Comes into Focus

Now, when someone asks what type of car you drive, and you answer with 'Genesis', more often than not, you'll receive a puzzling blank stare. However, one need not to be offended; Hyundai's entrant into the luxury car segment is still a relatively new player.

Revealed at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, it was Hyundai's interpretation of a luxury sedan to compete with the Euros. While sales of the first generation haven't exactly taken the world by storm, those enthusiastic boffins from South Korea are not waving the white flag just yet.

Scoop: New 2014 Hyundai Genesis Sedan gets All-Wheel Drive Option

This is not our first encounter with the next generation 2014 Hyundai Genesis saloon, but this time, our scoop photographer cleverly took a close up shot of the sticker found on this prototype's rear passenger window, which reveals that the car we're looking at is powered by a 3.8-liter V6 engine linked to an automatic transmission and a 4WD system. Hyundai's HCD-14 Concept Hints at the Design of the 2014 Genesis Sedan

Just hours after we posted the first official images of Hyundai’s HCD-14 Genesis concept, the Korean automaker revealed extensive details about its large executive saloon study that premieres at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show.

The concept previews many of the design elements that we will see in the upcoming 2014 Genesis mid-size saloon as well as in other future Hyundai models.

Although its dominant feature is the five-bar brushed metal grille, the HCD-14 Genesis also boasts rear-hinged rear doors with a single brushed aluminum hinge articulating diagonally from the cutline making for easier passenger access to the cabin.

While these features may sound a bit overboard, bear in mind that this is a concept, so the rear-hinged doors and (we hope) the gaping grille, at least in this guise, won’t make it into production.

Scoop: Hyundai's All-New 2014 Genesis Sedan Nearing Production

If someone were to tell you 10 years ago that Hyundai and its sister company Kia would try to battle Germany's finest car brands with a rear-wheel drive luxury sedan, you would probably laugh at their face.

Today, the German's are not in the least amused by the Koreans efforts, which started with the Hyundai Genesis premium sedan that was launched in production trim in 2008.

Surprisingly for an Asian model, the Genesis sedan has aged well cosmetically, though, in all fairness, Hyundai's designers did take some styling notes from their counterparts in Munich…

Nevertheless, Hyundai wants to keep its mid-size model relevant against the competition, so it's currently completing the development of the second generation Genesis Sedan, which according to Hyundai Motor Company CEO Kim Choon-ho, will launch towards the end of 2013.

Hyundai Mulling Over the Possibility of a BMW 3-Series Sedan Rival

After the revival of the Hyundai and Kia brands, complete with enormous sales to boast, the introduction of higher end luxury models like the Hyundai Genesis and Equus sedans and the Kia Quoris / K9 saloon, have placed the Koreans one step closer to more premium automakers.

By starting with newly refreshed models like the Sonata, Elantra and Veloster, Hyundai has gained more credibility in the average household than ever before.

With this new-found success, the Korean automaker could be looking to broaden it lineup to attack one of the toughest segments on the market, the compact executive sedan category.

2013 Hyundai Genesis Sedan Drops 4.6L and 5.0L V8, Keeps V6 and R-Spec Models

It has been four years since Hyundai launched the Genesis luxury sedan onto the market and while it will take a little over a year for the Korean automaker to present the redesigned version at the end of 2013, the company has made some changes to the current model.

Most importantly, Hyundai has dropped the 385hp 4.6-liter V8 and the standard 5.0-liter V8 models from the U.S. range with the 2013 Genesis now being available exclusively with the base 333hp 3.8-liter V6 and the sported-up R-Spec model powered by a 5.0-liter V8 rated at 429hp.
