The latest comparison test put together by Motor Trend, between the Mercedes-BenzSLS AMG Black Series (priced from $275,000) and the much cheaper at $102,000 SRT Viper, perfectly illustrates that smooth is much faster around a racetrack.

You see, while the American sports car may be lighter and more powerful, it can’t match the German car’s planted chassis feel, smoothness and virtually-instant gear changes. This makes sense on the road, because you can drive quickly, consistently and safely in the SLS, whereas the Viper just looks a lot more tail-happy and violent.

Mercedes Releases U.S. Prices for 2014 SLS AMG Black Series and C63 AMG Edition 507s

Coming soon to a Mercedes-Benz store next to you, are three brand-new and special AMG models: the 2014 SLS AMG Black Series coupe and the 2014 C63 AMG Edition 507 sedan and coupe, all of which have more power, more features, and as you would expect, a higher price tag.

Mercedes-Benz SLS Black Series Has the Paul Ricard Race Track to Itself

If all you want from a car is "GT3 performance for the road", then according to Mercedes-Benz, you need not look any further than their very own SLS Black Series.

The V8-powered German muscle car gets 626 hp (631 PS), which is good for pushing its carbon-clad body to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.6 seconds and up to a top speed of 315 km/h – 197 mph.

Mercedes-Benz UK Puts a Price Tag on New SLS AMG GT and Black Series

As is customary in Britain, Mercedes-Benz has released pricing and opened the order books for its updated SLS AMG GT and the new SLS AMG Black Series, just a few months ahead of first deliveries in July 2013.

Already available in other markets, the revised SLS AMG GT is the new base model with on-the-road prices (OTR) starting from £165,030. The GT gains a 20hp power boost over the previous SLS AMG for a total output of 583hp (591PS) and peak torque of 650Nm (479 lb-ft), which is the same as before.

The MC700 is the newest tuning package for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG sports car to arrive in the market and it comes courtesy of German performance outfit McChip-DKR.

It’s first duty is to take care of the pre-facelift SLS AMG's 6.2-liter V8 engine that in factory trim, is rated for 563hp (571PS) and 650Nm (579 lb-ft) of peak torque. It’s the New Black: The Low-Down on Merc’s Hardcore SLS AMG Black Series [27 Photos]

Unless you’re a professional racing driver, chances are that a “regular” AMG-fettled Mercedes-Benz is more than quick enough for every occasion. Special editions, though, are a very nice way to attract a few more clients a make a buck or two in the process as well.

On the other hand, while many special or limited editions are the same-old package with a few “exclusive” extras thrown in to justify the price hike, the Affalterbach-based outfit does things the right way.

That’s why when Mercedes ordered AMG to produce a Black Series version of their SLS AMG supercar they did a thorough job, making changes in every aspect of the car.

Of course, there’s the usual marketing hype about the SLS AMG Black Series, only the fifth model ever to wear that label, being “inspired by the GT3 racer” and “the ultimate choice for fast laps and a highly emotional driving experience”.

Mercedes to Unveil New SLS Black Series AMG Model in "Less than 24 Hours"

Earlier this morning, we shared a spy video of a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series in heavy cladding doing the rounds on the Nürburgring track. Now we learn that the Stuttgart-based carmaker's AMG division is preparing a surprise debut.

Along with the picture of a covered up car, AMG released this short statement:

"Anticipation is supposed to be the greatest joy. But don’t worry, Mercedes-AMG will not wait until Christmas to unwrap this gift. Kicherer is no stranger to Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, in fact, the German tuning firm has introduced close to half a dozen different proposals for the gullwing door model over the past couple of years alone.

Its newest take, aptly called the "Supercharged GT", continues the sinister dark theme with a matte black foil wrap, a hand-crafted mouth piece (actually, Kicherer calls it a grille, but just look at it…) that works together with a new carbon front lip spoiler, a discreet rear diffuser, carbon fins for the front fenders and a vented bonnet.
