Inside Sources Say Next Dodge Challenger SRT8 Coming in 2014 with Supercharged V8

Adding to the many rumors about the replacement to the current Dodge Challenger that have been going around for the past year, is a report from Chrysler enthusiast site Allpar and Autonews, that the next SRT8 will come with a supercharged 6.4-liter HEMI V8 called the "Hellcat".

While a Chrysler spokesman declined to comment about the existence of the engine, company engineers reportedly confirmed the story to Allpar. The supercharger system is believed to help bring the V8's output closer to the 640hp of the Viper's V10, up from 470hp of the current Challenger SRT8.

Dodge Mulling Camaro Z/28 Rival, Barracuda Reportedly Delayed

The unveiling of the Camaro Z/28, based on the latest incarnation of Chevrolet's muscle car, seems to have gotten Chrysler officials thinking. Their Dodge Challenger is currently far too heavy, and they feel that it can't compete with the more modern bow-tie sports car, or the much-improved latest Ford Mustang.

However, according to MotorTrend, a Z/28-challenger may be on its way, but it will require a lot of work on Chrysler's side, in order to make it happen, and to be competitive.

Jay Leno Takes Hurst's 570HP Supercharged Dodge Challenger SRT8 for a Spin

As much as he loves his Italian exotics, Jay Leno is also a muscle car fan. In his wide (and wild) collection, there are two Dodge Challengers: a 1970 R/T and a 2008 SRT, the latter being the fourth car that rolled off the production line.

His 1970 Dodge is fitted with a Hurst pistol-grip lever, something that apparently increased the car’s “cool” factor. The Hurst name remained dormant for some time but now it has been resurrected, so Jay had to find out what the company was up to.
