Mercedes Boss Says S-Class Pullman will Rival Rolls-Royce Phantom

With the demise of the Maybach brand, Daimler has been left without a player in the top segment of luxury cars, where the Rolls-Royce Phantom is now virtually on its own. One could say the Bentley Mulsanne is up there too, but I for one (and RR too), see it more as competitor for the Ghost than the monumental Phantom.

However, it looks like the Phantom will soon have competition, since the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class will spawn a Pullman model that will act as the flagship of the brand. In an interview with Autocar, Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche has confirmed that the S-Class Pullman will be aimed at the Rolls-Royce Phantom.

New Mercedes S63 AMG "Accidentally Revealed" While Rolling Off the Production Line?

Since the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been revealed, and we’ve seen quite a few photos of it, it’s really not hard to imagine what the hot S63 model will look like, especially if we take a peek at what goes into transforming an E-Class into an E63 – different sportier bumpers, slight body kit, new rims and AMG badging both inside and out, all complimented by special color finishes.

However, we need not wonder any more, as Mercedes has accidentally revealed the S63, at the Sindelfingen factory where it is built, through a video found by Autoforum. The Czechs argue that it wasn’t really accidental, and that we were meant to see this – we agree, though we cannot ever be certain of such matters.

Which Mercedes is the Fastest: 1979 Mercedes 450 SEL or 2013 S350 CDI?

From the same Auto Express video series that brought us the E30 BMW M3 against the F30 BMW 320d drag race, we now have a similar duel, this time between two Mercedes-Benz S-Class limousines.

The 1979 Mercedes 450 SEL was the top of the range model of the W116 generation, the first of the large Mercedes saloons to be officially called the S-Class. Powered by a 6.8-liter V8 gasoline engine delivering 286 hp and 549 Nm (405 lb-ft) of torque, the 450 SEL was the late 1970’s equivalent of today’s S63 AMG.

Autocar Says New Mercedes S-Class Coupe Shown In Display, We Shake Our Heads [Updated]

We're not saying it's impossible to be fooled by video shots and renderings, but sometimes it's not that hard to tell whether a car seen is a coupe or a saloon, which brings us to this cropped photo of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class' large display on the center console, courtesy of Autocar.

The British magazine claims that the car you see here is the first camouflage-free photo of the new S-Class Coupe (or perhaps next CL, if AutoMotorundSport's report is correct). The author states that, "the Mercedes S-class coupé has been revealed in a dashboard graphic captured during the car's development programme" adding that "the dashboard graphic appears to show a slightly modified front bumper from that fitted to the new S-class saloon."

New Mercedes S-Class Coupe May Keep CL Nameplate, will Premiere in Frankfurt as a Study

The recently revealed 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will have more versions than ever, with a coupe and convertible to be added to the lineup in 2014. While it has been widely believed that the two-door model will be called the S-Class Coupe, the big luxury coupe may keep its CL name after all, just like its previous generations.

This assumption is based on a set of spy photos published by German magazine Auto Motor und Sport where a tag linked to a prototype’s keys shows the name CL 127, with 127 being the internal code for the new CL.

Audi Responds to Report About Tesla Model S Beating its A8's Sales [Updated]

Tesla can add another star to its belt of pride after Audi of America came out with a rather lame press statement concerning a report from CNN Money, which said Tesla sold more Model S sedans in U.S. during the first quarter of the year (4,750 examples) than Mercedes-Benz S-Class (3,077), BMW 7-Series (2,338) and Audi A8 (1,.462) sedans.

Audi took issue with the headline from CNN Money, which said "Tesla sales beating Mercedes, BMW and Audi", and which we will agree with Ingolstadt's people, was misleading, but the chart below and the article itself clearly stated that the numbers concerned the Tesla Model S and the big sedans from the three German premium brands.

New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Uses Some 500 LEDs to Do Away With Conventional Lights

In the early days of automobiles, all illumination aside from the very basic exterior lights was either optional or not available at all. Having light bulbs in various places to illuminate the passenger compartment, glove box, even dials became standard as manufacturing methods and automation dropped the costs enough.

Now, though, Mercedes-Benz seems very pleased about completely giving up the use of conventional bulbs, all of which have been replaced with modern LEDs in their latest W222 S-Class sedans. So is this really useful, or merely a marketing scheme to make the car seem different and modern? The German automaker would of course be in favor of the former, which they do back up with several arguments.

14 Generations of Big Luxury Sedans from Mercedes-Benz

Nowadays, you might have a hard time telling apart two automobiles from the same marque, unless you have a tape measure in your hand (Audi, we're primarily looking at you, though, the same applies to some extent for all German premium brands), but there's no such problem when it comes to their names as most companies have streamlined their nomenclature.

However, it wasn't always like this, with automakers choosing more colorful names in the past, something that can create plenty of confusion when you’re looking into the lineage of a certain model, which in this case, is the S-Class full-size luxury sedan from Mercedes-Benz.

We Compare the W222 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Side by Side to the W221

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is visually very different to its predecessor, but to help you more easily spot where the biggest changes are, we have put together a selection of photos of both cars, and put them side by side for your convenience. Seeing them like this really brings out the differences in proportions, shape and the details.

The first thing that strikes you is just how flared the wheel arches of the W221 (the old model) are compared to the new W222. It is perhaps less striking to look at because of this, but it is by no means bland or uninspiring. The rear doors are also visibly larger and the roofline is more steeply raked. However, according to Mercedes, this does not hamper headroom in the back, as the new car’s passenger compartment is measurably larger.

Tour the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Sedan in 88 Photos and 7 Videos

We're guessing you won't be surprised to learn that the world premiere event of the brand-new 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan today was nothing short of spectacular, with the automaker flying in its flagship model from its birthplace in Stuttgart to the Airbus A380 Delivery Centre in Hamburg, Germany, on an Airbus A300-600 DHL cargo plane.

Even though there was no shortage of postings regarding the new W222 S-Class today, we have only began to scratch the surface, as there is much to talk about Stuttgart's premium model, as evidenced by the…120-page long press release.

Mercedes-Benz Lifts the Covers Off the All-New 2014 S-Class Sedan

Take a moment and scroll down to see all of the photos of the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, so that you can more clearly put into perspective what you will read here. This car will influence the luxury sector starting now and until it is replaced by an all-new model somewhere around the year 2020 (wonder what that’s going to be like?).

As you’re probably expecting, it’s packed with electronic gadgets, one more useful than the next. It’s all very safe, green and innovative, while also being wrapped in one of the prettiest bodies Mercedes has made in a while.

The restrained design is backed up by excellent proportions, which are emphasized by the deep side creases. It is a very different car than the one it replaces, but since it must also bridge the gap left in the lineup after Mercedes gave up on Maybach, it feels even more premium than the outgoing model that is still considered a class leader in many respects even today, despite being an 8-year-old model.

So what does the new S-Class bring to the segment? Well, aside from the headlights (full-LED with 56 diodes each), which have an odd shape, we say it’s design is quite successful and very modern - its sleek profile grants it another advantage in making it the most aerodynamically-efficient S-Class ever (Cd 0.24).

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Brochure Leaks Online Revealing the Car in Detail

The clock might be ticking quickly for the world premiere of the all new, and very important for a number of reasons, 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan, at a special event in Hamburg, Germany, next week on Wednesday, May 15 (watch the reveal live here), but the internet never rests…

On top of all the other official and unofficial leaks ranging from the front-end picture of the luxury full-size sedan to images of a toy die-cast model, we now have a brochure of the W222-codenamed Mercedes S-Class, courtesy of a reader of the Germancarforum.

The German-language brochure scans provide a clearer look at the new S-Class' more chiseled and cleaner exterior body that does away with the bloated fenders and gains a swoopier profiler that continues to remind us of the brand's smaller CLA and CLS four-door coupes.

The interior had already been shown by Mercedes-Benz itself recently, and besides the completely new design that blends classic and modern lines to create what could be one of the best looking cabins in the segment and not only, it also comes with a raft of new technology and comfort features.

These range from the twin 12.3 inch TFT screens for the instrument panel and infotainment system to a sophisticated climate control system with active perfuming and filtering of the air, and in a world first, heated armrests all around, just to mention a few.

More Details Surface About the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The W222 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which is completely new for the 2014 model year, is shaping up to be a very interesting car. As dozens of examples patiently wait outside the factory, we learn a bit more about it, with only eight days left to go until its official unveiling, which has been programmed for May 15. Given that the current generation, first introduced in 2005, is still on par with many of its rivals, we expect the W222 to really impress us, once full details are revealed. Read more »

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Revealed as a Die-Cast Model

With only a week left before its official presentation, information and images of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class continue to leak on the Internet. Following the official interior photos of the new flagship sedan, the prototypes caught on video at Mercedes’ plant and the leaked photo showing the front end of the car, we now get to see a new and different kind of set of images with the all-new S-Class.

The photo gallery was posted on a French forum dedicated to miniature models, so the S-Class you see in the images is a 1:18 scale model. However, since these die-cast models must replicate the real car  in detail, we can safely say we are looking at the 2014 S-Class.
